5 Important Reasons why you should Travel with Children

>> Over the years I noticed travelling had an immensely positive impact on me. Especially solo travel can push us out of our comfort zone and teach us many aspects of our personalities. It highlights our strengths and weaknesses and helps us develop tools to live a richer & more fulfilling life. I knew I wasn’t the only one who reaped the benefits of travelling for personal development.

This guest post series introduces you to others who have, in one way or another, travelled for personal development: be it to learn a new language, to mend a broken heart or to overcome an anxiety. Hopefully it will encourage you to travel more yourself and perhaps even help you to overcome barriers. <<

Meet Jolene from The Wanderlust Storytellers who, together with her family, discovers the corner of this world. She strongly believes that travel has many benefits for children. Read below why she thinks you should travel with your children!

Family travel must be one of the most rewarding ways of traveling around the world!  Sure, it comes with bucket loads of challenges, but it also comes with an immeasurable number of benefits.  One of which happens to be the personal development aspect that exists not only for the adults, but also for the children as well!  We love that by traveling to other countries we are helping in opening our children’s’ minds.  We are next to their side as they gain one of the best educations that life can provide. We are witnessing them grow and develop into becoming responsible world travellers.  We are watching them as they conquer their own little fears!

There are many reasons as to why you should travel with children, below we list the 5 main reasons that are important to us!

5 Important Reasons as to why you should Travel with Children!

1. To teach them to be responsible world travellers.

Parents play a very important role in what sort of role-models as travellers they want to be for their kids. We wish for our kids to be responsible world travellers, to learn how to travel with purpose. To teach them how to not focus on merely being a tourist,  but on how to appreciate our role as visitors to  another country.

We love teaching our kids about how to support the local communities and businesses, about how to build bridges between our culture and theirs and about how to learn more about the people that live there! We want them to grow up to be mindful travellers, travellers that make conscious decisions about how they would like to travel and what impact they would like to leave behind.

No better time than now to start developing those mind concepts!

2.  To provide them with a world education.

Why-you-should-travel-with-children-Education

Being a high school teacher, I understand the importance of what kids learn at school. But being a travel blogger, to me, there is nothing as important education wise as the world education that comes from travel! I believe it is the best way to learn about the things that really matter in life.

Put away the geography textbook and travel somewhere! What better way to learn about where the country lives on a world map? About what sort of biome/s is present in the destination and what sort of animals survive there? Not only that, but you will learn more about what religion is predominant there, what daily life is like for the locals, as well what their traditions and culture is all about. Add in, an education that teaches you to speak words or phrases from a different language and how to exchange money into a different currency.

The education that comes from traveling goes beyond what is found in textbooks, it teaches them so much more in terms of life skills, social skills and about different worldviews!

3.  Opportunities for self-discovery; trust in their own abilities and adding layers of depth to their own personalities.

Why-you-should-travel-with-children-Self-Discovery

One of the most important reasons as to why you should travel with children is to provide them with opportunities of self-discovery. This doesn’t mean that you need to travel internationally, but it does mean that you allow time and opportunity for adventure; time away from technology; time outside of their normal life ‘bubble’.

It takes courage to follow your dreams! It takes strength to trust in your own abilities and to believe in yourself. It takes patience to figure out who you really are. Travel provides us, as well as our children, with ample opportunities to discover different layers of who we are! Even from a young age, travel exposes our children to aspects that teach them about themselves.

Travel exposes them to a life outside of their comfort zone, it shows them how different life for kids are in different countries. It makes them look past the technology and the toys and teaches them how to truly live life! It is also very important for us as parents to show our kids that if you trust in your own abilities, you can create a lifestyle that might be completely different to the norm.

To build a life that is exciting and full of adventures!

4. In order to build sensitivity and an embracing nature towards different nations of the world.

Not only do we happen to live in a very multicultural country: Australia; but we are also proud to have a family that comes from different corners of the globe!  I was born in South Africa, whilst Andrzej immigrated over from Poland. Both our children were born in Australia and soon they will have a step-mother that is from the Phillipines!

It is important for us to raise kids that embrace and show acceptance towards all nations from all over the world. We want to expose them to different cultures and different ways of life and show them how to appreciate the aspects of the human race that makes us all so different, unique and fascinating!

5.  To cultivate a love and passion for travel.

Children are naturally curious by nature and what better way to foster and build on that curiosity than by exposing them to people, places and cultures that are so different to their own! We love traveling with our children because it exposes them to situations where they might be a bit scared, but facing those fears at a young age with us, their parents, by their side is a great way to build resilience and to learn to let the passion for travel override any fears they might have.

Not only that but it teaches them more about being independent individuals, figuring out what food they like, which countries they enjoy and what style of travel best fits with their own unique personalities!

There are many more reasons as to why you should travel with children, and we would love to hear more about why YOU travel with your kids! We realize how much more expensive it is to travel as a family compared to traveling solo. We realize how tricky it is to travel when your kids might be school aged. We know how easy it is to stay in routine of daily life.

But we also know how rewarding family travel is, so much so, that it has become one of our priorities in life. If you make family travel your priority, suddenly taking your children to new destinations becomes achievable. And after you watch them learn and grow and develop as little personalities on these trips, you know that every single dollar you invest in these holidays is worth it!

Wonderful post – I think that world travel is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give their children these days. The world education and life lessons they receive from traveling are priceless, and I truly believe that if more people traveled from a young age there would be much more tolerance and understanding and knowledge in the world.

Also, its fun to travel with kids from a parents perspective because you feel young gain and see the world through a new set of eyes!

Ahh yes – you hit the nail on its head Meg! The amount I, as an adult, have learnt through travelling is incredible — i can’t wait to see the world through my own kids’ eyes one day 🙂

This is a very insightful article, I absolutely am in tune with the views expressed here. Travel is instrumental in instilling a broader world view in children and they grow up into adults with a more rounded personality.

I’ve almost always had my children with me when I travel, unless it’s business travel. I’m the rare Mom, it seems, who enjoys the company of her children at any age. And I strictly limit their electronics use on trips so I can be sure they get to see everything.

When I was younger, we would always travel to cities nearby back home. It was rather fun and enjoyable, I have fond memories of traveling together as a family. We don’t have children yet but hopefully we’ll be the same people as we are when we do! This post touched my heart – will look back on it when we start a family. Thanks!
