What to Pack for a Weekend Away in Autumn
We are quickly approaching one of my favourite seasons ever…the leaves are slowly changing colours, it’s starting to feel crisp in the mornings…it’s time to store those sandals away and wrap up warmer! Tights, skirts and coats are filling our wardrobes and beautiful scarves are a must to match our outfits. Autumn is arguably the best time to travel – especially if you love to photograph!
There is nothing more beautiful than to stroll around a town on a morning in fall…

But what to pack for a short weekend away? If you’re flying to a nearby destination, you are most likely only taking cabin luggage with you and it can sometimes be tricky to know what you should pack as space is limited.
I compiled this list of what I usually pack for a weekend away. Since autumn is around the corner, I’ll share my favourite items for those crisp beautiful golden days ahead of us!
1) Stylish Cabin Luggage for the Sophisticated Travellette!
If you decide to fly somewhere for a few days, you’ll need cabin luggage, right? The usual allowed dimensions are 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. Keep that in mind! By the way, House of Fraser have a huge sale on for cabin luggage at the moment. Click here and have a browse at those gorgeous suitcases!
My favourite is by far the Samsonite Lite-Shock in Sand. What do you think? I love the sandy shell colour and the trendy turquoise that is hidden inside. I also love that Samsonite suitcases come with a 10-year guarantee! They are by far the best suitcases out there. At least in my opinion.
2) A Lightweight Packable Down Jacket to be Prepared come what May!
When I did pet sitting at an Equestrian Property in New Zealand for a month, the lovely owner bought me a beautiful lightweight packable down jacket as a present for my ongoing travels. I was there in winter – it was freezing cold and this super lightweight jacket was an absolute lifesaver!
In fact, I wondered how I survived all these years without one of these! They are so easy to pack and whenever you feel it is just that little bit colder, you’ll be feeling nice and warm within minutes.
There are some really stylish ones out there too, for those ladies who are just that extra little bit fashion-conscious!
3. Comfortable and Elegant Boots for those long Walks out Exploring!
For a short weekend city trip away, I always wear comfy boots that look elegant. They are the perfect all round shoes for those days packed with sightseeing and exploring. I love how I can just wear them with some skinny jeans during the day and at night combine them with a cute skirt or dress and I always look polished no matter what the occasion. Make sure to get a pair that is waterproof and has a comfortable sole for those long hours of walking.
Make sure to get a pair that is waterproof and has a comfortable sole for those long hours of walking! These boots are made for walking!
4. Sturdy and Small Umbrella to come Prepared!
I lived too many years in England to not carry an umbrella with me at all times. Many parts of Europe tend to be rather humid in autumn too – so, I make sure to take my umbrella with me when I go abroad. My favourite is a simple black umbrella that is lightweight and sturdy. I’d rather spend a little bit more and have something that will last me for years.
There is nothing more annoying than having an umbrella break because of a bit of a stronger wind! We don’t want that Mascara to smudge, do we?

5. Stylish Black Hat for a bit of Old Charm!
My friend Isabel always wears a black hat when she braves the cold streets of London – and she always looks absolute stylish when she does! I decided I needed to invest in a black hat myself and I’ll no longer travel without it when I do city trips away. You always just look that little bit more sophisticated plus it keeps you warm!
There are many out there, this one is one of my favourites!
6) Clothes for Daytime & Evening Wear for Spectacular Holiday Photos!
I generally take two pairs of trousers (one pair I’m wearing, the other one in the suitcase) that go well with my boots, two comfortable jumpers or shirts & cardigans and more elegant clothes for the evening.
I also swear by merino wool jumpers for those colder destinations. You’re never too warm or too cold in them! I recently discovered merino wool ponchos which are an excellent alternative to a daytime jacket.
I usually pack in a black or navy blue elegant dress if I decide to go out on a special dinner date with the better half or the girls. I’ll make sure to wear something that would look good with the black boots that I’m wearing as I seldom pack a pair of high heels (unless it is a special occasion and that case I carry simple black heels).
7) Shampoo, Skincare & Makeup to Glam up for every Occasion!
I use very particular products and for a weekend trip away, I usually fill up empty 100ml plastic bottles (which you can get in most retailers – I like to buy mine at Primark as you can buy a whole set for £1.-) with my products. I use Paul Mitchell’s Super Strong Daily Shampoo & Conditioner. I also make sure to pack some of my all-time favourite hair mask from Moroccan Oil (a brand I recently discovered and completely transformed my hair)!
I’ve been using Bare Minerals for makeup for years and because I use powder mineral makeup, I don’t have to worry about excess liquids in my hand luggage causing me issues at security. I also have been using Benefit’s Rockateur recently which I love and always carry with me.
For skincare, I use Origins products which generally don’t come in a bigger size than 100ml – perfect for air travel. During the day I use Origins GinZing to give me that extra boost of freshness to wake my skin up. Love this cream and could not imagine my life without it! To take the day off, I use normal cleansing wipes of any brand – mostly Nivea. At night, I use the wonderful ‘Drink Up Intensive Mask’ to help my skin rehydrate overnight so I’m ready for another beautiful day ahead exploring new exciting parts of town!
8) Straightener (that doubles up as a Curler) for that Goddess Look!
I love bringing my straightener as you can use it as a curler too! I have been using Babyliss straighteners for years – they are gentle on my hair and easy to work with. Don’t forget to use a heat protection spray before you use them*! For instructions on how to use a straightener to curl your hair, click here.
*You may need to check at the airport if they sell these in smaller sizes so you abide the ‘100ml rule’.

9) Pashmina or Shawl /Scarf for an Elegant City Look!
Mmmh…what better feeling than to wrap up warm in a big soft pashmina when you walk down the banks of the Seine and the autumny wind is blowing? I always carry one in a neutral colour in case it is too warm to wear a jacket or coat. They always make me feel beautiful and lady-like!
They are also perfect to cover up in the evening when you’re walking home early in the morning after dancing the night away!
10) Nightdress or Pyjama for when it’s cold Outside!
For that cosy feeling when you just came back home after a long day of sightseeing, wear that super comfortable nightdress or pyjama – get cosy in your hotel bed, watch a good movie (Rom-com anybody?!) on demand and enjoy those chocolate-covered strawberries you bought in that special store in the art district today….oh…and you may even have a sneaky glass of bubbly…why not?! You only live once!
You’re on holiday!
11) Jewellery & Watch because a Lady simply Must!
Because it’s all about the accessories, right ladies? I usually wear a watch and some all round jewellery which I can wear during the day and later at night. I’m absolutely in love with Caroline Creba at the moment! Or what about this gorgeous necklace from Guess which is currently on sale! Isn’t it gorgeous?
Ahhh…too many beautiful things out there – and they don’t take up much space, do they?
12) Lightweight Camera for those unforgettable Snaps!
For those who love to photograph while they explore new cities, it goes without saying that this should be a must-have in your packing list! There are some incredible lightweight cameras out there perfect for those short trips away! Are you ready to make some memories and record them forever? Those spectacular dreamy autumn pictures will soon be hanging on your wall somewhere…perhaps in the living room?
13) Notebook to Record those special Memories!
I love finding cute out-of-the-ordinary cafés that serve a good brew, sit down, watch the world go bye…perhaps even eat a pastry…and then write my thoughts down while watching people pass by. I always carry a notebook for those special creative moments that I want to jot down and come back to so I can blog about in the future!
